West Bengal ( Paschim Banga) is a state in the eastern region of India along the Bay of Bengal. With over 91 million inhabitants (as of 2011), it is India’s fourth-most populous state. West Bengal is the thirteenth-largest Indian state, with an area of 88,752 km2 (34,267 sq mi). Part of the ethno-linguistic Bengal region of the Indian subcontinent, it borders Bangladesh in the east, and Nepal and Bhutan in the north. It also borders the Indian states of Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Sikkim, and Assam. The state capital is Kolkata (Calcutta) the seventh-largest city in India, and center of the third-largest metropolitan area in the country. West Bengal includes the Darjeeling Himalayan hill region, the Ganges delta, the Rarh region, and the coastal Sundarbans. The main ethnic group is the Bengalis, with Bengali Hindus forming the demographic majority.
(পশ্চিমবঙ্গ ভারতের একটি রাজ্য। এই রাজ্যটি পূর্ব ভারতে বঙ্গোপসাগরের উত্তর দিকে অবস্থিত। ২০১১ সালের জনগণনা অনুযায়ী, এই রাজ্যের জনসংখ্যা ৯ কোটি ১৩ লক্ষেরও বেশি। জনসংখ্যার নিরিখে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ ভারতের চতুর্থ সর্বাধিক জনবহুল রাজ্য। এই রাজ্যের আয়তন ৮৮,৭৫২ কিমি২ (৩৪,২৬৭ মা২)। পশ্চিমবঙ্গ বাংলা-ভাষী বাঙালি জাতি অধ্যুষিত বাংলা অঞ্চলের একটি অংশ। এই রাজ্যের পূর্ব দিকে বাংলাদেশ রাষ্ট্র এবং উত্তর দিকে নেপাল ও ভুটান রাষ্ট্র অবস্থিত। ভারতের ওডিশা, ঝাড়খণ্ড, বিহার, সিক্কিম ও অসম রাজ্যও পশ্চিমবঙ্গের সীমান্তবর্তী। রাজ্যের রাজধানী কলকাতা শহরটি হল ভারতের সপ্তম বৃহত্তম মহানগরী। পশ্চিমবঙ্গের দ্বিতীয় বৃহত্তম শহর বর্ধমান ৷ বর্ধমান আসানসোল শিলিগুড়ি দুর্গাপুর এই পাঁচটি পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মহানগর ৷ ভৌগোলিক দিক থেকে দার্জিলিং হিমালয় পার্বত্য অঞ্চল, গাঙ্গেয় বদ্বীপ, রাঢ় অঞ্চল ও উপকূলীয় সুন্দরবনের অংশবিশেষ এই রাজ্যের অন্তর্গত। বাঙালিরাই এই রাজ্যের প্রধান জাতিগোষ্ঠী এবং রাজ্যের জনসংখ্যার সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ অংশই বাঙালি হিন্দু।)
